women knitters

Our Knitters

Our knitters are an informal group of women living just outside of Nairobi. Many of the women are single mothers and all of them face a daily struggle to provide for their families. The women enjoy the creativity of the knitting, but most importantly the flexible nature of the work empowers them.

The women are paid by the piece, allowing them to work as little or as much as they are able while looking after their families. All our knitters earn more than the basic Fair Trade wage and can meet to knit in the Toto Knits workshop where their children are welcome and Mary is on hand to give guidance and advice. As we grow we hope to set up a health-care fund to help the women meet the cost of unexpected medical treatment for themselves and their families.
